From: Higgins >> Transmitted on behalf of Bummer and Greenbottle - Zagreb HHH << "We have received a couple of panic calls wondering if the Island of Hvar is not in harm's way and are we going ahead with our plans etc, etc. Neither NATO nor the UN will deter us! We shall proceed! Hvar is far from the action in Bosnia-Hercigovina. It has never been exposed to any of the unpleasantries of the fighting. No hashers are chained to Serb ammo dumps, but Sarajevo kennel is probably vulnerable! we selected the bloody place so that you could add a little interest to your lives - round and round in circles you go, every week, same old thing. BORING! Bullet/shrapnel holes will be added to T Shirts for a small additional charge - before donning or after; as you wish. We thought that our European brothers would jump at the chance to come and see how peaceful and organized Croatia is and how similar it is to other European countries, and we believe that, for the most part, they will stand by us." "Not only that it is quiet here, always was and will be but the only thing people could suffer from is the hangover from too much good beer & wine"..." You see, we DID transfer one of our big local events few years back when we haven t been happy with the local situation, I assure you, this is not such a case". So here's the latest update received from Bummer, EuroHash IV Co-Chairman. Note that airline deals from CSA are ONLY available through their Zagreb office (although you can pick up your ticket everywhere). So contact Bummer for more info. From: Greenbottle, JM Zagreb H3 Thu Jul 13 19:17:13 1995 MET DST Greetings from the Zagreb Hash in Croatia. ZH3 is one of Europe's oldest kennels. From 29 Sep to 1 Oct we're hosting EUROHASH IV on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic. Although in the general vicinity of Bosnia, this part of the world is unaffected by the current crisis, (other than the Rapid Reaction Force swine drinking up all the local beer as they pass through) but you'd be close enough to tell your grandchildren that you were there. There are no restrictions on travel - it's about like journeying through Germany or Austria. Pick up a visa at the airport on arrival. Please encourage all subscribers to drop in if they happen to be in the neighbourhood - they're guaranteed a great time. On-On. Greenbottle
From: Higgins Fri Aug 5 00:23:00 1995 MET DST EuroHash IV will take place in Jelsa (island Hvar) from September 28/29 'till October 02. From: Greenbottle, JM Zagreb H3 Tue Aug 29 22:12:02 1995 MET DST EUROHASH IV, Hvar, Croatia,29 Sep-1 Oct - Update for Bullshitter in Ankara: Yes, it's still happening. After some initial nail biting, we've decided to go ahead now that John and Jacques have deployed the Rapid Reaction Force to cover our asses. We have a number of Hashes who've said they're coming, and hopefully the calm that has settled over the Adriatic Coast will encourage others. The good news is that there won't be any tourist riff-raff to get in the way. There's lots of room and a large crowd is unlikely. Register on arrival if that's more convenient for you. Let us know if you're coming, though, so that we can book your room (26 marks). Coming on from Istanbul is a good plan. Croatia Airlines has a Wed flight at 2100 for $325 direct to Zagreb or Adria Airlines (Slovenian) has a Tue flight at 2300 to Ljubljana for $234 (followed by a three hour bus ride to Zagreb). We can meet you in Zagreb and put you up, or, you can overnight in Ljubljana then make your way to Split next day by bus or feeder airline and join the advance party who'll be in Hvar from about Tuesday. For info, the Zagreb to Split via Knin rail line is now operating daily for those interested in seeing the recently fought over Krajina area. It would be great to see you here. ON-ON! Greenbottle. JM Zagreb H3.
From: Greenbottle, JM Zagreb H3 Thu 31 Aug 95 09:30:07 EST Dear Likk'mm, Good to hear from you. There are about sixty people registered to date for EUROHASH IV on 29 Sep, and we're hoping for a hundred. Looks as though some may come on from the Istanbul 600th being held the previous weekend. We're going to have a ball regardless how many come! Suggest that you NOT rely on travel advisories, as these will not be accurate. The Ancona to Split ferries continue to operate - they've never been disrupted - and the situation all along the coast (ex Dubrovnik) is calm and quiet and the area is much less threatened than it has been for the last four years. Do your best to convince MM and MP to come - we'd love to see them. Good luck - good sailing - On-On to JELSA. Greenbottle JM Zagreb H3
STATE DEPARTMENT TRAVEL INFORMATION - Croatia ============================================================ Croatia - Travel Warning August 18, 1995 The United States Department of State warns U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Croatia because of the potential for rapid deterioration of the security situation there. In early August 1995 a number of cities were shelled during a Croatian military offensive into the Serb-held Krajina region. While fighting in that region has subsided, Croatian cities near Serb-held areas of Bosnia and Croatia are still targeted by rebel Serb forces. These include Debrovnik, Kutina, and Osijek. In the recently embattled areas, mines, unexploded ordnance and bands of armed combatants pose risks to travelers. Despite unsettled conditions in parts of Croatia, the main cities of Zagreb, Rijeka and Split, as well as the Istrian Peninsula and islands north of Makarska, are beyond the range of Serb shells and are largely unaffected by fighting. No. 95-026 This replaces the Travel Warning for Croatia issued July 26 to add areas of instability and to indicate the authorized departure of U.S. government employees' families has been lifted. Croatia - Consular Information Sheet August 23, 1995 Warning: The United States Department of State warns U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Croatia because of the potential for rapid deterioration of the security situation there. In early August 1995, a number of cities were shelled during a Croatian military offensive into the Serb-held Krajina region. While fighting in that region has subsided, Croatian cities near Serb-held areas of Bosnia and Croatia are still targeted by rebel Serb forces. These include Dubrovnik, Kutina, and Osijek. Country Description: Croatia is an independent nation, formerly a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. Facilities for tourism are fully developed although not always accessible in the unstable areas of the country. Entry Requirements: A passport and visa are required. While the visa can usually be issued at the port of entry, obtaining it in advance from a Croatian embassy or consulate may prevent potential complications at the border. Croatian authorities require foreigners to register with local police when they first arrive in a new area of the country. This is usually handled in routine fashion during hotel registration. However, failure to register is technically a misdemeanor offense, and some Americans have been subjected to arrest, short-term imprisonment, and fines. Additional information on entry requirements can be obtained from the Embassy of Croatia at 2343 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone: (202) 588-5899 or the Croatian Consulate General, 369 Lexington Ave., New York, New York, 10017. Areas of Instability: In May and August, 1995, Croatian government forces recaptured territory formerly controlled by rebel Serb forces. This area includes western Slavonia and the Krajina region bordering Bosnia. While it is increasingly possible to travel there, the risk of mines, unexploded ordnance, and armed combatants still exists. The area of eastern Slavonia is still under rebel-Serb control and has been a recent launching site for artillery attacks on Osijek and other nearby villages. Areas bordering Serb-held territory in Bosnia, e.g. Dubrovnik and Orasje, are also subject to shelling. The city of Rijeka and the Istrian Peninsula in western Croatia remain largely unaffected by the fighting, and are accessible by road from Slovenia and by ferry from Italy. Visitors who stay abreast of developments and familiarize themselves with local protective shelters, police stations, and hospitals reduce the risk to their safety. Crossing Serb lines or checkpoints may be dangerous. Medical Facilities: Health facilities in Croatia, although generally of Western caliber, are under severe strain. Some medicines are in short supply. Doctors and hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for health services. U.S. medical coverage is not always valid outside the United States. Travelers have found that supplemental medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has proven to be useful. Further information on health matters can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's international travelers hotline at (404) 332-4559. Crime Information: Croatia has a relatively low crime rate, and violent crime is rare. Foreigners do not appear to be singled out; however, as in many cities, displays of wealth increase chances of becoming the victim of a pickpocket or mugger. Such crimes are more likely to occur in bus or railroad stations. The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to the local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Useful information on safeguarding valuables and protecting personal security while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of State's pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad", It is available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. Currency Information: Credit cards and traveler's checks are more widely used than previously but still are not accepted everywhere in Croatia. Terrorist Activities: There have been isolated terrorist bombing incidents in Zagreb in recent years, but these seldom resulted in personal injuries. Though no major incidents were reported in the last year, some crude, small-scale bombs have been used against property in incidents that police suspect are linked to crime or ethnic tensions. Other Information: If stopped at a check point, travelers are expected to be courteous and follow instructions. Many parts of the UN protected areas are under the control of undisciplined militia groups with which the U.S. Embassy has little contact or influence. Drug Penalties: U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in which they are traveling. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and fines. Registration and Embassy Location: U.S. citizens may register at the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb and receive updated information on travel and security within Croatia. The U.S. Embassy in Zagreb is located at Andrije Hebranga 2, tel. (385-1) 456-000. No. 95-098 This replaces the Consular Information Sheet dated June 28, 1995 to update the warning and areas of instability.
STATE DEPARTMENT TRAVEL INFORMATION - Croatia ============================================================ Croatia - Public Announcement February 17, 1995 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman For Immediate Release The possible termination of UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) operations in Croatia at the end of March 1995 and the Croatian Serb suspension of confidence-building measures have heightened tensions in Croatia and could lead to violent incidents at any time between rebel Serb forces and Croatian government forces, especially along the existing ceasefire line. Travel on the recently re-opened section of the Eastern Slavonia highway located in UNPA Sector West (approximately between Novska and Okucani), continues to pose a risk to travelers. Additional information on travel in and to Croatia is available in the Consular Information Sheet for Croatia dated December 27, 1994 or by contacting the American Embassy in Zagreb. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- The "travel-advisories@stolaf.edu" mailing list is the official Internet and BITNET distribution point for the U.S. State Department Travel Warnings and Consular Information Sheets.
