From: Lefebvre Pierre-Marc <LBV@trasys.be> Date: Tue 15 Apr 97 13:41:00 +2 Subject: EH'97 - the FINAL update HHHi folks, 100 days before *Sprouting in Brussels* with fellow hashers next July. 440 registrations received as of today. If you haven't signed up yet, you should soon be able to pick up updated information on Flying Booger's homepage and worldwide Hash calendar at : http://www.dakotacom.net/~woodford/eurohash.htm I'm off in a few days for two weeks of HHHolidays, getting high on rum and hash during IAH in Trinidad & Tobago, starting with the hashficial European pre-ramble in Schiphol airport (NL) this Friday (F.I.L.T.H. From: Lefebvre Pierre-Marc <LBV@trasys.be> Date: Tue 15 Apr 97 13:41:00 +2 Subject: EuroHash '97 - Latest Update HHHello FB, Just before leaving for IAH in T&T, here's our latest and last bit of litterature about EuroHash in Brussels. I've cut some crap and didn't include any picture to avoid clogging your computer ;-) Message in three parts. The second relates to hotel accommodation in Brussels while the third is about the European On On Tour and other supporting events. If you still have some space on your web page ... This propaganda encompasses and details all previous information. Many thanks in advance. On Out to F.I.L.T.H. Dirty Flight (35). Higgins - EH'97 Chairman 440 registrations and 100 days to EuroHash ************************************************* EuroHash 97 - Sprouting in Brussels The FINAL update << So, you thought we already took the money and ran ? Well, besides the villa in Hawaii (coming along nicely, thank you), we ve spent some beer while consolidating the bits and pieces that will (hopefully) make EuroHash '97 a big success. As of the date of printing (April 15, 1997), 440 hashers and harriettes have signed up to celebrate 50 years of hashing in Europe. We re expecting up to 700 participants for this milestone as well as 450 runs with BMPH3, your host. HOW DO I GET THERE ? By plane : Brussels airport (a.k.a. Bruxelles National a.k.a. Zaventem) is next door. Fly there, climb aboard the City (not so) Express train for a mere BEF 85 per head and step out downtown. Trains run every 20 minutes and stop at North, Central and South station. Your best bet, depending on hotel location, is to get out at either Brussel Noord [map ref. G1] and then take the underground or at Brussel Centraal [map ref. F6] and then walk. By train : Get out at either North, Central or South Station and then walk or take the underground depending on hotel location. For those coming from London, the EuroStar arrives at Gare du Midi / Zuidstation [map ref. A10]. By car or motorbike : All roads lead to Rome... so too in Belgium unless you follow a few basic principles : (a) drive on the right hand-side, even if some Belgian drivers don't; (b) Belgium is bilingual (French/Dutch plus some German) so name of towns and places will vary along your road, depending on the local lingo; (c) aim for the E40 motorway Lige/Luik, Leuven/Louvain towards Bruxelles/Brussel. Do NOT take any other exit marked Bruxelles/Brussel however tempting it might be. Unless you come from Germany via Aachen then Lige, you ll have to hit the eastern part of Brussels Ring (motorway circling Brussels area) at some stage. The E40 access is between exits 2 and 3 of the Ring; (d) when on the E40 towards Brussels, you ll be facing a difficult choice of 3 lanes separated by concrete barriers. Take the one in the middle, towards Commission Europenne/Europese Gemeenschap . After the tunnel, the road eventually hits a roundabout. Welcome to Schuman [map ref. L7/L8], home of most Irish pubs in Brussels. (e) then, either hit the Wild Geese [map ref. K7] if thirsty or make it safely to your hotel first. By foot : Not, unless you're a local hasher (but then you haven't reached this line), a triathlon athlete (but then you re probably not a hasher ;-) or a dummy (you might qualify as a hasher but you d better start walking now). By parachute, ski, handgliding or bungee jumping : Hmmm .... OK ! I ll have a down down for this one. REGISTRATION SCHEDULE Thursday 24 14:00 to 18:00 Plaza Hotel, city centre [map ref. F3] (M) De Brouckre Friday 25 10:00 to 17:00 Wild Geese, Schuman area [map ref. K7] (M) Maalbeek 18:00 to 22:00 VUB campus, Ixelles cemetery area (M) Delta Saturday 26 11:00 to 13:00 VUB campus, Ixelles cemetery area (M) Delta All registration venues should be easily found by following signs from nearest (M)etro station FINAL PROGRAMME Friday 25 18:00 Hashficial opening at VUB campus. Welcome speech from Manneke Piss Grand Master snack food available, meet and greet fellow hashers 21:00 Live entertainment by The Flybusters (Belgian band - soul music, rock) Sat 26 02:00 VUB campus closes; dispose of Rong Jon and Sex Reject 12:00 Gather for the buses if you want to run, stagger or shortcut 13:00 Last bus leaves the VUB campus for the run sites 19:00 Food is served 21:00 Food is gone 22:00 Live entertainment by Chocolate Starfish (UK, Cyprus IH band) interrupted/complemented by Hash skits Sunday 27 02:00 VUB campus closes; dispose of Rong Jon, Sex Reject and Whopper 11:00 GM s meeting (hopefully deciding on EuroHash 99 venue) 11:00 Haberdash market creates hhhavoc at the VUB campus 12:00 Gather for the buses if you want to run, stagger or shortcut 13:00 Last bus leaves the VUB campus for the run sites 19:00 Food is served 21:00 Food is gone 22:00 live entertainment (again) by Chocolate Starfish (UK, Cyprus IH hashficial band) interrupted/complemented by raffle draw and European Down Down championship Monday 28 02:00 EuroHash 97 is over. VUB campus closes. Who cares about dead bodies now ?? Early notice : during the r*ns, there will be NO drinks whatsoever served at the VUB campus but ... there will be beer on the buses, before the run, during the run (BMPH3 mandatory drink stop), after the run, during the circle and, finally, back on the buses. ENTERTAINMENT Well, YOU first ! If you don t come with a skit, there won t be Hash skits. Let us know as late soon as possible if you shall/should/might perform some entertainment on Saturday night. In the unprobable event of many chapters actually delivering the goods, Hash skit Part II will take place on Sunday evening. The 2 Masters of Ceremonies (MC s in short) shall be Boulders (West Rhine H3) and Madonna (S.H.A.P.E. H3). Cheers to these two nuts for taking the challenge of staying sober on a hash weekend, for your enjoyment ! RECOMMENDED EH'97 WATERING HOLE 1. The Wild Geese (Irish pub) (M) Maalbeek corner of Jozef II and Livingstone 2. The Franklin (Hash headquarters) (M) Schuman corner of Archimede and Franklin 3. Le Corbeau (typical Brussels pub) (M) De Brouckre rue Saint Michel, near the Plaza hotel These places are hasher friendly (as long as you don t vomit on the guy next door) and will offer special discount during EH 97. TIPS FOR THE WEEKEND Landmarks : If you re lost, drunk or simply wandering around, remember these names : . Grand Place [map ref. E6] (Brussels main historic market square and home to many trendy pubs), . De Brouckre [map ref. E4] (square and metro station near the Plaza Hotel - Thursday registration), . Schuman [map ref. L7/L8] (roundabout not far from the Wild Geese - Friday registration) and . Delta [outside map] (closest metro station to the VUB campus). Transportation : All selected hotels are within walking distance from public transport pick-up point. Underground ( or Metro as we know it - see logo), bus and tramway are all convenient means as Brussels is off-peak at that time of the year, i.e. no traffic jams ! Both the European area (Schuman roundabout) and EH 97 venue (VUB university, Pleinlaan/Campus de la Plaine) are directly accessible by underground from the city centre. Take line 1A direction Hermann-Debroux and step out at Maalbeek/Schuman for hhhitting the European area and its Irish pubs (the Wild Geese is strongly recommended - 25% off all drinks for hashers). Continue until Delta and it s a 5-minute walk towards the VUB campus (just follow the signs). Personal safety : As in all large cities, don t wander around alone at night in downtown Brussels (De Brouckre back streets - Place Rogier area). If in doubt/very drunk - take a taxi. The VUB site is a university campus and we ll have our own security personnel so if you want to get hammered and pass out on the grass, feel free to do so ;-) Means of payment : Credit cards (Visa, Eurocard/Mastercard) and EuroCheques will be gladly accepted at the registration desks. After that, it s back to the good ol cash. No panic though as our venue (VUB university campus) is cunningly located in front of the Brussels headquarters of CITIBANK. There, you can get money 24 hours a day, everyday, supposing you ve brought your Visa, Eurocard/Mastercard, Diners, Cirrus or Citibank card along. There is also a cashpoint next to the VUB dining hall. In the hotels area, plenty of ATM/cashpoints and Bureau de Change are eagerly waiting for you. They usually offer a fair exchange rate and, during the week, banks are open from 09:00-ish until 16:00. Besides a very few exceptions, shops only deal in Belgian francs, EuroCheques and major credit cards (Visa preferred). In the Schuman area, you can find numerous cashpoints accepting most debit/credit cards. Hey, this is the capital of Europe after all ! BEERS Plenty ! Just in case you still haven't heard, Belgium offers a wide choice of 450+ beers tasting from sweet to sour and ranging from 4 to 12 vol. alc. Three types of beer will be available at the VUB campus (Jupiler - lager, Hoegaarden - white, Leffe - ale) and one evening will feature some more varieties (hmmmm). Should we also mention wine and softies ? Wired and wanting to know more about Belgian beers ? Check out http://www.dma.be/p/bier/beer.htm Only the drunk survive ! All in, we have budgeted an average 12 litres (i.e. about 25 pints) of beer per head, notwithstanding complimentary drinks. Remember BMPH3 motto : We never run... out of beer . THE LION'S After the success of the Cyprus InterHash experience, we also decided to ask the local Lions Club for logistical and administrative support. You will meet them at the registration desks, selling food at the longest run sites (bring BEF 100 notes) and driving the beer trucks all weekend (the brewery guys are too lazy for that). Make them feel at hhhome and welcome their useful help in organising the EuroHash '97 bash. EH '97 RAFFLE The Lions have also been asked to organise the traditional raffle. They will be selling tickets @ BEF 50 during the weekend. All profits from the raffle will go to charities agreed upon by EuroHash 97 and the Lions. Buy a ticket and you ll get a chance to win a free flight to Malaysia, from anywhere around the world, for attending InterHash 98 in Kuala Lumpur. With already 3,600 signed up as of the date of printing, it is bound to be the largest hash event organised so far. The flights are offered by Malaysia Airlines - proud sponsor of InterHash 98. CATERING FOR YOUR LIVER : THE FOOD Everyday a choice of meat, fish and veggie meals to accommodate everyone s taste. Friday will simply offer one main dish as you won t have been running in the evening (but certainly drinking all day); Saturday and Sunday will feature typical Belgian food with starter and main dish. CATERING FOR THE FIT, THE UNFIT & THE SOCIAL MISFIT : THE RUNS 5 runs have been carefully selected to offer participants a wide variety of lengths, terrain s and landscape. All are within 30 minutes drive from the VUB site. All have been recceed for your pleasure or leisure. All will provide at least one beer stop (BMPH3 all-year round standard). Usual rule will apply : first come, first served. If you absolutely want to run that trail, get there on time. When a bus is full, it will leave for the run site. When all buses are gone for that particular run, the only choice left is to get on another trail. The EH 97 bar will NOT remain open during the runs but there will be plenty of beer on the buses. Blue trail : Manneken Pis city centre r*n A to B trail starting from a famous landmark of Belgium history, taking in many of the not-less-(in)famous parts of Brussels including a visit to worship our very own shrine and his sister. We are assured he will be fully kitted for the occasion and rumour has it a miracle might hhhappen on the day.... Trail should last 60 minutes. Green Trail : Under the elephant s bum r*n Trail set by the Brussels Hash House Harriers (the original run-loving Brussels hash) in the beautiful woods of Tervueren, just to the East of Brussels. You ll be surprised to experience how easy it is to get drunk during the journey to Africa. Trail should last 75 minutes. Red trail : European r*n A to B run starting from The landmark of this famous historic town, now immortalised by Abba in their winning Eurovision song contest entry. En route, you will appreciate some monuments relating to the famous battle plus some appropriate drink stop. Mainly running in the countryside, full unabridged (65 minutes) and short censored (45 minutes) versions of this trail will be available from your host. Black trail : Humbeek/Hombeek r*n A quarry in the middle of the Flemish countryside, just north of Brussels, on the way to Mechelen. A perfect location for the H files. One hour of guaranteed high quality shiggy and spectacular scenery. Make sure you bring a change of clothing (not optional). Trail should last short of 60 minutes. Ballbreaker trail : Only the drunk survive r*n One of the great advantages of living in Brussels is having the forest on your doorstep. This ballbreaker trail run entirely in the beautiful Fort de Soignes. Expect this trail to last 2 hours with the possibility of a shortcut reducing the run by about 15 minutes (ha ha ha). See how many deer s and boy scouts you can spot. The Lions will organise snack food on the red and ballbreaker trails (tbc). This is the only thing NOT included in the weekend package so bring some BEF 100 bank notes with you to the run site. THE EUROPEAN ON ON TOUR Join the half-minded and adventurous spirits for a one-week tour of BeNeLux including Leuven, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, Delft and Amsterdam. One Day - One Hash - One Beer (at least). But be quick : only 50 places to fill in by June 01 ! Do it NOW with the one-stop hashing appended registration form. EUROHASH '99 : IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE ? Since Paris started EuroHash in 92, the number of chapters interested to bid has varied from a meagre nil (Madrid EH 93) to a tremendous 2 (Mannheim EH 94). Still, hashers seem to enjoy it but nobody is fool enough to commit himself and a few friends to devote zillion hours into organising a big piss-up. Turkey has expressed some interest months ago but nothing since. So who want s it (not) ? Any bidder, please contact us at +32 2 345 88 09 (fax) Perhaps is it time to consider joining, for once, UK Nash Hash and EuroHash ? Just an idea ... it s up to YOU. In front of each hotel, I indicate between brackets the number of beers awarded (different from previous list) ********************************* EUROHASH '97 ACCOMMODATION IN BRUSSELS Brussels oldest and best known inhabitant, Manneken Pis symbolises the town s impudently mocking and boisterous spirit (according to the official Brussels tourist map you ll find in this package). You ve been warned !! Between two tours of duty, our little boy has been recceeing the city centre hostelry to make sure you ll be duly welcome before they say Please don't come back . Here's his comments, advice and recommendations... I ve recceed all proposed hotels and am proud to announce incredible discounts to bona fide registered hashers. Your agent, Resotel, is not a tour operator nor a consolidator. It is a highly professional central desk for hotel room reservation in Belgium. This means you won t have to pay any fee on top of advertised prices, you re guaranteed the best rates in town (we ve double-checked this) and selected rooms always come with full buffet breakfast. For family, I ve pre-booked a limited number of quadruple rooms/apartments (2 bedrooms). These are more convenient but not cheaper than double/twin rooms on a per person per night basis. All selected hotels are within 5 minutes walking distance from a (M) station and max. 20 minutes from our wonderful Grand Place. Most have minibars in the room ... We've placed an order for about 10,000 litres of beer so we DO challenge you to drink us dry (remember Belgian beer starts at 4.5 to reach stratospheric 12 percent vol. alc.). Thanks to latest registrations batch, we have added a few extra in the weekend package : * as public transport stops around midnight, there will be a free shuttle service to bring you back from the party site from 00:30 thru 02:00. The shuttle will stop at all strategic points i.e. Schuman area bars, 2 main hash hotels (Bedford and Plaza) and Grand Place. * a Belgian beer "village" will be opened all Saturday night. A selection of 7 Belgian beers amongst the best (or, as we called these, "Bieres Speciales") being available at cost price (BEF 50 each) in their original glass (available for sale). You will find Gueuze (Brussels speciality) and Kriek (cherry beer), Chimay and Westmalle (trappist beers), Duvel and St Feuillien (tasty blonde beers) not to mention Bush (strongest with 12 percent vol. alc.). * Goodie bags are looking very good and will include a large sport bag, bum bag, plastic souvenir mug and a T-shirt (at least). Those registering after Monday will miss the sport bag as we only have 630 of these (and only 650 bumbags). * a new concept of Information Desk will be on display at Friday registration site. Remember EH'97 motto : "Only the Drunk Survive" !! * Rumour has it a miracle should take place on one of the Sunday runs.... * No declared bidder for EH'99 so far but I think we might have two so far). Time to wake up !! If you want to join the fun, this might be your last chance (oh nooooooooooooo). 'nuff said so far. Time to go to bed On Out. From: Lefebvre Pierre-Marc <LBV@trasys.be> Date: Tue 22 Jul 97 17:56:00 +2 Subject: EH'97 warming up The first horde of hashers arrived this weekend in town. About 55 participants on Belgian National Day run got their hands on 23 different Belgian beers. From past experience, I had planned 29 litres of "special" beer (up to 12 % vol. alc.) + 40 litres of lager (Jupiler - 5.2 % vol alc.)... The bastards ALMOST drank us dry by the last beer stop. The Alcohol Response Unit was called in a frenzy to save Manneke Piss H3 reputation and brought another 40 litres of lager for the circle. Hash business was quite chaotic as usual, including She Mussel Bitch being iced and treated to Belgian beer from Texas for her birthday , one Manneke Piss hasher being named and several funny Down Down. After the hymn, we were left with about 4 litres of lager and 2 litres of special beers. Total consumption (just for run + circle) was thus 109 litres of beer i.e. 2 LITRES OF BEER PER HEAD (... who said HEAD ?) or the equivalent of 2.5 litres of lager per head. Not to say that the owner of the 3 Hash bars visited were all smiling when we finally left .... Now, let's see if the 700 participants can demolish 10,000 litres of beer over a weekend... On Out. Higgins - We NEVER run ... out of beer (just)

No problem in the hotel !! Hagissimo and Cunning Linguist spending most of the day on water after an early puking session (3 sickbag award to Hagissimo). Michel, the bus driver, starts joining the mood by announcing drink stops instead of wee wee stops. Had two beers with us. Thursday -> F.I.L.T.H. Excellent circle starting at 00:45 to be promptly interrupted by the Rijkswacht at 01:00. After some panic from our side, the night manager kindly offers a party room (bunker-type) in the basement where the circle continues until 03:00 !! Probably the best F.I.L.T.H.y circle ever. Copious amount of drinks consumed during the long journey, including 1 litre of aquavit and 3 litres of Jgermeister (MEDICINE !!) Michel, the bus driver, kindly asks if he can join the pubcrawl and keep on partying with us until 02:00. Had 6 beers during the pubcrawl, one down down and a few more plus a genever and a whiskey from the minibar ! Friday -> Dutch Nash hash in Amsterdam .... well, my body tells me it's time to enter high maintenance phase and I decide to come back to Brussels for some serious rest. Sorry Dam, probably missing another good party. The Youth hostel doesn't allow alcohol in the rooms anyway. From: Giommi, Nancy Date: Sun 3 Aug 1997 10:15:09 +1000 Subject: Eurohash 97 Got there on Thursday morning (11-ish) and once checked into the hotel took a nap, fell asleep to the BBC broadcast of the test cricket match between Aus and Eng. Good Cricket!!!! Then we headed towards the pub crawl that some British (I think) hash put together...FUK Full Moon H3, or something. Great set up actually. They gave us passports and we followed trail to different pubs/bars of different national calls. We got our drinks and our passports "stamped" and basically drank our way through a lovely part of Brussels. It was very good fun and it was a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends and make some new. Ran into the San Diego group: Zulu Boi, Deep Throat, Wet Meat and some females (why are their names so far from my memory now?!). Stayed out severely late, but up in time the next morning (noon) to do SDH3's red dress run. About 100 of us, but don't quote me. Good job, despite the fact that alot of people didn't realize it was a red dress run until the day before. They did a lot of improvising and we all still had lots of fun. We apparently got under the skin of the local authorities out in front of the palace. It seems the impropriety of it all was more intolerable than the actual inebriation. Then I suppose they got a little upset over the frolicking in the king's fountains...but, hey, what's a little splashing? We were then corralled back to the start and had the circle, some more beers and swaggered home for a nap (some more cricket, if you catch my drift) until it was time to start the real party!! Friday night, the opener, was typical of first nights. Lots of fun, everyone in real mood to meet, greet and swing to the beat. Band was good, beer was plentiful. It was loads of fun. Cannot believe the people > I ran into. Did some shirt swapping and one Californian (who I convinced to trade with a Cambridge lassy) regretted the swap ALL flippin' weekend (too bad, so sad). Then, and I don't know how this happened, but all of a sudden it was time that we made our way to the last bus. Now...what happens next is foggy, but, my beloved ran into some locals (en route to the buses) and saw one littering. He made a point to the local that littering bugs him (green and clean and all that Kiwi rot), which the local didn't take too kindly. One thing led to another and the next thing I see is three hashers (one a female) breaking up a fight -- basically shielding my beloved from these three locals (they ganged up on him). Then one pointed at my beloved and uttered the words: I'll be back (in a very Schwarzneggian way, ...my but the impact of Hollywood). He kept his word and when the buses finally arrived (probably about 15 minutes later) the ruffians returned brandishing a knife and looking for, guess who? A bigger hash crowd had gathered, as we were waiting for the last buses and all, and the bigger crowd had no idea what was going on and the ruffians, probably seeing the bigger crowd, started whirling fists, knife and words and a bigger brawl ensued. We were already on a bus and watched in amazement these events unravelling. Then the unbelievable happened (this is after the first punches were thrown ON A HARRIETTE, and decked her, asshole couldn't even hit one of the umpteen guys around him) one of the ruffians took a GUN!!!! out of the car and held it to the head of another hasher, Speedy from Arhous H3. It was surreal (the effect from within the bus probably added to the surreality). I couldn't move and the crowd seemed to take its own slow motioned steps around the captive hasher. No one could do anything (the few wretched security officers were busy breaking up a fight in another circle and when they saw the gun were as helpless and clueless as the rest of us). Then some hasher wrestled the gun-holding ruffian to the ground (the gun turned out to be fake, but regardless.....) and security landed hard on the guy and everything seemed to break up. The buses were loaded and we started our trek hotelward. But...the action was not to stop there...the car decided to follow OUR BUS and stopped when the bus stopped at each hotel and the ruffians jumped out and checked who was getting off (who knows who they were looking for at this point, but me and my beloved were VERY ANXIOUS, as you can very well imagine). We were the last stop and by that time the car had disappeared (never to be seen again), but we all scurried indoors and the hasher that tackled the gun to the ground said to me: "The first shot was fake, but the second one wasn't..." I think he meant that he had a real gun, or who knows what...the beer, the hour, the action...my head was spinning. He kept talking and what I take away from his conversation was that he is some secret agent type and further information would require my demise. It was a very altering experience and I have a strong feeling and I do injustice to the drama of it all. We are all such innocents, we hashers. He's my new hero, Speedy is. Even through my frozen position behind the realitively secure bus window, I could see how upright and stalwart he stood there. We do not expect to be faced with such drama and have to prove how brave we are, sober or drunk. He proved to me that he, at that moment, was the bravest of us all. But, this is about a party... Saturday we decided to lay low, sleep in and avoid the world. We skipped the runs and went downtown. Had a lunch of mussels and frites and then went home for a nap (more cricket, eh eh) then it was time to get to the venue. Another party, the band, Starfish, from the UK with expert assistance from Splash (UK); I think the down down championship was this night, Penis (USA winning for the men) and cannot recall if there wa a woman's one, as I was doing my own self-competition to see if I could outdo my own consumption quantities!! And once again, it was time for the last bus. With some trepidation we made our way, this time, without incident. Sunday we did run, downtown, and they got the Mannekin Piss, the city symbol, to piss beer from which we drank!! The mayor came out, did a down down, was given a commemorative t shirt and the cops that had been called out drank along with everyone. Delinkwent didn't know whether to be shocked at the fact that they desecrated the city symbol or that the mayor and local constables were drinking from his tiny penis!! Then, more revelry back at the main venue, a wet tshirt contest that a Yank female won, although I believe she's another of the fortunate few who lives overseas, more music, beer and finally a lot of good byes. Almost .... I still have one piece of unclaimed property, found on the VUB site : a pair of prescription glasses, half-moon type, in a blue leather-like case. If you know who it belongs to, please let me know before October 01. EH'97 final meeting will be held on October 06 so expect a closing report on the web around mid-October. On Out. Surprisingly enough they only complained about one night. We obviously have been too busy drinking for singing loud enough during the whole weekend ;-) Another successfull mission ! On Out. Where'd this all start?
