From: Gregory Bogle <71214.35@CompuServe.COM> Date: 07 Jul 97 15:49:59 EDT Subject: What / where is Cappadocia? The 1997 Annual Cappadocia Weekend Hash was announced a few weeks ago, and I've received a few queries from Hashers who are wondering where and what "Cappadocia" is. I hope the following answers most, if not all, of your tourism-type questions. Here are some additional details, with more to follow as the Ankara H3 Mis-Management Committee gets their shit together. I'm sure Gooly Gooly and Dr. Ruth will have updated info later this month at EuroHash '97. Again, the basics, as they are known now: What: 1997 Annual Cappadocia Weekend Hash (#12) When: Friday-Saturday-Sunday, 19-21 September 1997 Where: ***** (Five-Star) Dedeman Kapadokya Hotel in Nevsehir For details on the Dedeman Hotel, check out: http://www.umut.org.tr/hotel/homes/dedeman/dedeman_kapadokya.html Cost: USD $125 for the entire weekend, all-inclusive, with a goody bag, plenty of Efes Pilsen, food, Cappadocian wine, softies, and more Efes Pilsen. * I'd bet that not even Stray Dog would complain about * * the quantity nor the quality of the food and drink. * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Where or what is 'Cappadocia'? you may ask. I've searched out some web pages, and taken the liberty of copying some tourism info, just to give you an idea of why Cappadocia is such a great place for early fall Hashing. Cappadocia takes its name from the ancient Roman name of Goreme, a city in the region, but today it is the general name of this geographical or geological area. The major towns in Cappadocia are Nevsehir, Goreme, Uchisar, Urgup and Cavusin. Nevsehir, a provincial capital, is the gateway to Cappadocia. Violent eruptions of the volcanoes Mt. Erciyes (3916 meters) and Mt. Hasan (3268 meters) three milion years ago covered the plateau surrounding Nevsehir with tuff, a soft stone comprised of lava, ash and mud. The wind and rain have eroded this brittle rock and created a spectacular surrealist landscape of rock cones, capped pinnacles (called "fairy chimneys" by the locals) and fretted ravines, in colors that range from warm reds and golds to cool greens and greys. For a great picture of the area, check out: http://ankara.ada.net.tr/argeus/cappa.htm Cappadocia offers a one-of-a-kind landscape and terrain for Hashing. Imagine r*nning in and around those "fairy chimneys", down ravines, up the hills, and viewing a sunset with a rainbow of colors reflecting off the hillsides. (This will be included - free of charge - with the world renowned Hash Circle on Saturday.) As you can see in the pictures, the terrain is a bit rugged (just ask Likk'mm); sturdy shoes are recommended. Unless, of course, you do like the Scandi-Hashers and just sit around the pool and drink all weekend. (Then you just need sunblocker!) If you'd like more info, the current issue of the U.S. tourism magazine "Escape" has a very interesting and enjoyable article about Cappadocia. Some other web sites with some good pictures and info are: http://www.focusmm.com/trt_m_06.htm http://www.kul.lublin.pl/~bogdank/expo1/ant1-4.htm Hope to see ya in September.
